Anna and the undergraduate researchers visited Lethbridge Biogas, a facility that transforms livestock manure and food compost into renewable energy in the form of natural gas. Their operation is a shining example in industry of repurposing waste into valuable products, which is an approach that closely aligns with the focus of our work.
We were fascinated to learn about the scale of their operations and how their combined process of anaerobic digestion and thermal hydrolysis allows them to manage these complex and potentially hazardous waste streams effectively.
During our visit, we had an interesting conversation surrounding flocculation and its potential role in helping businesses like Lethbridge biogas. Specifically, we discussed how flocculation has the potential to reduce manure’s water-weight and cut transportation costs. It was encouraging to connect with another team that is actively contributing to sustainable farming through innovative waste-repurposing strategies.
