The Biofloc Project

What's Happening at UCalgary

In July of 2023, our team of Organic Materials Chemists at the University of Calgary began an industry collaboration to revolutionize the way flocculation is done on dairy cattle farms in Alberta. With environmental sustainability, cost and accessibility in mind, we are currently developing a suite of biodegradable and non-toxic flocculants from abundant natural sources. Our goal is to develop real solutions for real applications, and so we are looking to expand our team and our collaborator network to include players from different backgrounds and fields: people who have direct experience in the field of wastewater remediation and recycling; people who have farms and ranches and would like to be part of our piloting phase; people who are interested in the science behind flocculation and want to see how it can work for them; non-profits, associations and companies who are interested in promoting agricultural environmental stewardship and circular economies; and anyone who feels compelled to help out in this endeavor.

Financial support for (this project) is provided by the governments of Canada and Alberta through the Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership (Sustainable CAP). This funding is delivered by Results Driven Agriculture Research (RDAR).

We honor the Indigenous peoples who have cared for the lands of Alberta since time immemorial, including those from Treaties 6, 7, and 8, and the historical Northwest Métis Homeland. We acknowledge the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit who have lived here for generations, expressing gratitude to the Knowledge Keepers and Elders, both present and past. This acknowledgment is a gesture of reconciliation and respect for their territory.
